Nutritional Snack

Did you know that by just moving your jaw up & down you can burn up to 46kj per hour?

Of course it goes without saying that if you’re moving your jaw up and down on a greasy old hamburger the energy you burn making that chewing motion will be undone by the excess calories you consume….a shame I know…but life isn’t always fair.

So the next time you’re feeling hungry, why not try reaching for some sugar free chewing gum before you raid the vending machine for that horrible sugary snack……remember “chew chew chew….and you’ll burn loads of kilojoules, joules, joules”

Goji Berry

In China they like to eat their Goji Berries raw….plucked straight off the goji berry bush and straight down the hatch is the preferred method of the East.

So what are Goji Berries?

The Wilderness Family Naturals website summed it up best “Goji Berries are gathered from plants growing in the mountains of Tibet. They are wild-grown, and wild-harvested. They are also certified organic by Integrity Services, International (ISI). The berries are dried naturally by the sun. They are not fumigated, sweetened, or adulterated in anyway.”

Why are Goji Berries good for us?

Goji Berries have long played important roles in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) where they are believed to enhance immune system function, improve eyesight, protect the liver, boost sperm production and improve circulation, among other effects.

Now that we know what Golgi berries are and why they’re good for us, let’s have a look at a couple of recipes we can whip up at home to keep the family nice and healthy:

The first recipe comes from naturopathiccenter.com and is a immune boosting tea that you can make at home to drink during the winter months. The astragalus and goji berries can be found at your local Chinese herbal shop. Read more

Is A Low Carb Diet Good For You?

February 19, 2008 by Liz Harper · 4 Comments

Low Carb Diet I Often get questions about various diets and to be honest I don’t really believe in dieting….when I looked up the word “Diet” in the dictionary the definition was - a selection or a limitation on the amount a person eats for reducing weight…. So by definition, if you’re limiting what you eat or selecting specific foods - what happens when you stop? Or even worse, if you continue to diet.

I believe what ever you choose you need to be able to sustain it indefinitely. When you factor that in, then you really need further consideration about the health benefits or impacts of restricting certain foods. Are you going to get all the vitamins and minerals you need for a healthy body? Are there any impacts on your bone density when you diet (I’ve heard about research that says high protein diets make the blood more acidic and then this leaches calcium from your bones thereby reducing bone density). Whenever you embark on any diet you really need to consider the long-term impacts of how you eat, versus the obvious benefits of weight loss.

With that being said I thought I’d take a look at the latest craze in dieting…The “low Carb diet”.
