Reading in a magazine today (WomensHealth) about what drives people to exercise. It’s an interesting topic, because it’s different for everybody. In this particular case study around 1000 people were quizzed and the results were quite diverse.
- 88% of women exercised to lose weight compared to 71% of men.
- 65% exercised because they were gym junkies addicted to fitness.
- 36% exercised to attract a partner. I must admit when I was younger I fell into this category…nothing like feeling good and looking good in a pair of jeans and tight t-shirt at the bar on a Friday night.
- 4% went to the gym to find a date compared to 17% who went to the gym to make new friends.
I find it interesting that the percentage of men exercising to lose weight was close to the women’s percentage. I would suggest that this is a figure (Excuse the pun) that has increased over the years and it looks as though men are finally becoming weight conscious. And with good reason….men with bellies are prime candidates for heart disease.
What about the 4% of people who use the Gym as a dating agency…I wonder what their success rate is? I personally couldn’t think of a worse place to find a date. You’re not exactly looking your best….even if you’re in shape you’re more than likely dripping with sweat and out of breath.
I’d love to hear comments on that – have you ever used the gym as a place to find dates? Why do you exercise? You can easily make your comments by filling out the form below.
I’d love to hear from you.

Why exercise? More like 88% ‘because I have to’ and 12% ‘it’s fun once I start’
New blog is looking great Liz!
Funny how the article didn’t mention the endorphins and relaxation from when exercise is actually fun: surfing, swimming, cycling long the beach, yoga etc.
And I’ve seen you at the gym- lucky you didn’t meet Kel there lol
