Snacks
They’re so clever!

While from a marketing point of view I applaud Supermarkets, Petrol stations and 7/11’s for their strategic placement of sweet snacks right next to the checkout, from a health & fitness perspective it’s “Temptation Island” baby.

Liz is still working on my spending at Petrol stations…I’m forever picking up a bottle of coke zero and chewing gum…(ok, and the odd chocolate bar)

Special offers are another thing that suck me in at the supermarket….they always seem to mark the donuts down to a dollar whenever I’m shopping…it’s like they know I’m coming in.

Here’s a great post written by Ali over at “The Diet Office” that Liz sent me a link to today…if I wasn’t such a thick mere male I would say she’s trying to tell me something….check it out it’s called “Six foolproof ways to beat impulse snack buying

(In Liz’s email to me she added - For you we probably need 100 foolproof ways but it’s a start….so nasty)

Later this week we’ll be looking into how much it really costs you to be overweight….looking forward to that article from Liz later in the week.

I’m off for a walk…catch ya tomorrow.

Kel.

I’ve worked in retail off and on over the years (I’m with a company that has a retail division now) and you are right, there is a strategy to placement. Basically, if it is easy to see, it likely has the highest margin and is more likely to be an impulse buy.

On a positive note, I was in a convenience store in New Orleans a few weeks ago and they had a bowl with fresh fruit sitting on the counter. I snatched up a couple of pears and an apple. There was a premium price on them (far more than I’d pay at a supermarket), but well worth that impulse.

@Fatbastard - Thanks for your comment and I’m with you on the product placement thing….it’s especially hard with a small child..everything is in their eye line.

Good for you grabbing a fresh bowl of over priced fruit….I bet it felt good even if the hit to the wallet didn’t.

    Kel
