I’ve been meaning to blog about this since I saw Nintendo’s new “Wii Fit” advertised on a billboard a few weeks ago.

If you haven’t heard about Wii Fit, it’s essentially a video game that incorporates exercise in four major categories:

  1. Aerobic exercise
  2. Muscle Conditioning
  3. Yoga Poses
  4. Balance Games

Wii Fit managed to sell over a quarter of a million copies in it’s first week…..which at $70 a pop is a lot of dosh….but is it worth the ticket price?

I should say right off the bat that by no means is this post a review of Wii Fit, It is simply a comment on the idea of having a video game that encourages children to exercise. I love it.

Mum and Dads if you’re going to buy a video game for your child this year that could improve their health…this could be it.

Can you picture it? Lounge rooms everywhere filled with kids performing previously unheard of feats such as Push-ups, step aerobics, yoga, jogging and a whole bunch of other physical activities they’d previously have rolled their eyes at us parents doing.

Now kids will actually want to exercise? Well at least, that’s the theory.

I know some people will bash this product and quickly dismiss it as a serious fitness option. Fitness professionals in particular will argue till the cows come home that a video game can not and will not replace a personal trainer.

True.

But what it will do in my opinion is bring a little fitness into the lounge rooms of kids who rarely see the light of day let alone exercise.

It’s been speculated that Nintendo, playstation, and Xbox and other video games are contributing to obesity in children.

Will Wii Fit peak kids interest in physical activity again? On a small scale I would say yes…or at least I hope so. Any victory in the battle against childhood obesity no matter how tiny is still a win as far as I’m concerned.

I think the real question is whether kids will actually play the game - I can’t help but think that the flurry of cash thrown at it might be more from enthusiastic parents and less from the kids who are begging for it. A good alternative to this is Dance Dance Revolution, which is documented all over the web as a method a lot of folks are using to get some cardio exercise in using a video game. The game is great because it reaches across traditional demographic age barriers - baby boomers and generation “Next” are equally engaged. I am a parent who now has to eat her words and admit that I have fallen victim to the Wii marketing.   I disliked the traditional computer games that kids are playing, simplying because they seem addictive and they turn into vegetables.   I am currently pricing the Nintendo Wii units, around $429 at Target, and the only reason I agreed was that the kids seem to be quite active when they play.   I gave my kids the option of either a birthday party or a Nintendo Wii.  They chose the Wii.   The way I see it I am still saving money.     Now just have to creative in finding ways to stop them fighting!
